Locke urges energy conservation as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts arctic cold front

OLYMPIA - With the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicting a cold front coming into Washington tomorrow, Gov. Gary Locke today urged citizens and businesses to further reduce their use of energy.

"As we know, meteorology is an inexact science, but we have a serious energy situation and we can't take chances," Locke said. "We must take precautions."

The governor said the Bonneville Power Administration already is operating under emergency conditions and everyone needs to help it out with further conservation efforts.

"We don't anticipate disruptions of service, but we want to relieve the pressure on Bonneville, which will in turn help keep water behind the dam and available for fish this spring and energy this summer," said Locke.

"The situation is serious," emphasized the governor. "It is not getting better. This cold snap that is predicted by NOAA means we all must be extra vigilant in our use of energy."
