Locke honors new president of Washington State University

PULLMAN - Gov. Gary Locke today praised Washington State University's new president for his willingness to make change while honoring the school's unique history and challenges.

Locke made the remarks at the inauguration of Dr. V. Lane Rawlins in Beasley Coliseum. Rawlins is the university's ninth president.

"I admire President Rawlins for his willingness to communicate a clear vision of what he wants, and then set about doing it," Locke said. "I especially appreciate his efforts to shift resources to make the University's strong programs stronger."

Locke also highlighted Rawlins' creativity and imagination, as well as expressing his confidence the new president will continue the work of the presidents before him.

The governor also pointed out the strengths of Washington State University, including the close working relationship between faculty and students and the positive effect the school has on the state, the nation and the world.

"The international impact of what goes on here at WSU is phenomenal. Thank you for garnering this incredible recognition through teaching, research and service," said Locke.

"Washington State University has a great leader in President Rawlins. Under his leadership, I look forward to future successes of WSU, of its faculty, staff, students and alumni."
