Gov. Gary Locke Praises New Economic Strategy for Puget Sound Region

Gov. Gary Locke today praised the announcement that business, labor, government and community leaders in the Puget Sound region have joined together to create the Prosperity Partnership – a landmark effort to create an economic strategy for the Puget Sound region. It’s the first time that leaders from throughout the central Puget Sound have agreed to collaborate on a unified economic agenda for the region.

“The Prosperity Partnership has the ingredients to help put the Puget Sound region in the best position to compete for and win new jobs,” Locke said. “It was during the competition to win the Boeing 7E7 ‘Dreamliner’ that we showed that regional leaders could come together to successfully pursue common economic goals. It's important to keep the momentum and lessons learned from that effort alive.

“This strategic partnership will pave the way future investments and decision-making in the Puget Sound region. I’m pleased to see so many groups and individuals involved, including the state Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development. By working together, Washington will continue to see increased job growth resulting from strategic, sustainable economic development efforts.”

Co-chairs of the Prosperity Partnership are: Mark Emmert, president, University of Washington; Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg; Tomio Moriguchi, chairman and chief executive, Uwajimaya; Alan Mulally, president and CEO, Boeing Commercial Airplanes; Rita Ryder, president for strategic initiatives, YWCA of Seattle, King County and Snohomish County; and Brad Smith, general counsel, Microsoft Corporation.
