Gov. Gary Locke Appoints Ira Uhrig to Whatcom County Superior Court

OLYMPIA – Sept. 15, 2004 – Gov. Gary Locke today announced that he will appoint District Court Judge Ira Uhrig to the Whatcom County Superior Court, effective Oct. 1.

Uhrig was the only candidate to file for the Superior Court seat vacated when Judge Michael Moynihan retired on Aug. 31. As a result, Uhrig was automatically elected to the position. However, absent an appointment by the governor, he would not officially take the position until January.

The Whatcom County Council will now be responsible for appointing a replacement for Uhrig in the District Court. The appointed judge will serve until the next scheduled election. With the county council making that appointment now, Whatcom County voters will have a year, rather than just less than seven weeks, to receive information about possible candidates and make an informed decision.
