Gov. Gary Locke’s Statement on Unconditional Release of California Sex Predator Brian DeVries to Washington State

OLYMPIA – Sept. 13, 2004 – Gov. Gary Locke today issued the following statement on a California judge’s decision to grant unconditional release to convicted sex predator Brian DeVries, and DeVries’ impending move to Washington state:

“It is outrageous that this judge released a sexually violent predator with absolutely no requirements for surveillance or supervision.

“Last summer, our state Attorney General’s Office joined the California Attorney General’s Office in attempting to block Mr. DeVries’ release to Washington state.

“California has a fundamental responsibility to monitor Mr. DeVries, and they have abandoned that responsibility.”
