Gov. Locke's statement on Seattle Public Utilities announcing a voluntary call to reduce water use

"Today Seattle Public Utilities asked people to voluntarily cut down the amount of water they use. This is a proactive approach. If we can all cut back a little bit each day, it may avoid mandatory restrictions later.

"It's easy to cut back with very little effect on our lifestyle. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. Take shorter showers. Buy a low-flow showerhead. You've heard a lot of these suggestions before... and many of us practice these already. And you don't have to give up on your lawn and garden this year. Just water them wisely. You can talk to your local landscaper and garden responsibly.

"If we all work together in the short-term, we'll be better off in the long-term. Remember, the effects of the drought will affect people in different areas different ways.

"We are all responding to the energy crunch by using less electricity. Now, let's do it again with water. We can never underestimate the power of conservation."
