Gov. Gary Locke Announces New State Trade Representative for Germany; Promotes Washington in Europe

In an effort to further promote Washington businesses and agricultural products abroad, Gov. Gary Locke today announced Washington state’s new trade representative for Germany. Locke introduced Anja Kathrin Herzberg of AKB Marketing during a ceremony at a Frankfurt Starbuck’s store. The governor is promoting Washington products, services and tourism opportunities in Germany and France.

“We are proud to add Anja Herzberg to our international trade team,” Locke said. “I am confident that her experience and expertise will help increase two-way trade and tourism opportunities for Washington businesses and farmers in Germany and across Europe.”

AKB Marketing is a leading marketing firm for tourism, international trade and business development in Europe. The firm is located in Mainz, Germany (near Frankfurt). In her new role as the state’s trade representative for Germany, Herzberg will work to develop two-way trade opportunities as well as further promote Washington products and services in Germany and Europe.

“In hiring Herzberg, we have secured the services of a versatile and knowledgeable expert who has consulted for leading companies and has a solid track record in international trade,” said Larry Williams, international trade director for the state Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development (CTED).

Williams cited a recent CTED study that confirmed the significance of the German market to Washington’s economy. The study ranked Germany as the top future European market among Washington companies surveyed by the agency.

“Germany has always been a top market for Washington products, especially in the fields of information technology, bio-science and aerospace,” he said. “Frankfurt’s central location and its international travel connections also offer excellent conditions for developing both domestic and pan-European markets.”

Germany is also the second largest producer of overseas travelers to the United States. Washington’s tourism office, in partnership with Oregon, has had a tourism presence in Frankfurt for eight years.

Williams added that the state’s Paris trade representative, Dominique Gervais, will now focus primarily on tourism development in France and Europe, supported by a partnership between Washington state, the Port of Seattle and the Seattle Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Earlier this week, Locke met with French tourism officials in Paris to discuss increased tourism opportunities with Washington state. In addition, the governor and officials from the Port of Seattle met with Air France executives to discuss potential non-stop service from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Paris. Paris is the city with the largest amount of traffic that does not currently have non-stop service out of Sea-Tac.
