Gov. Gary Locke’s Statement on Passage of Primary Legislation

OLYMPIA – March 10, 2004 – Gov. Gary Locke released the following statement on the Legislature’s passage of primary legislation:

“I am pleased that the Legislature has passed legislation creating a replacement primary system. We will now take a hard look at the bill before deciding on a course of action.”

The U.S. Supreme Court announced last month that it would not hear the state’s appeal of the Ninth Circuit court’s ruling that the blanket primary is unconstitutional. The state must enact a new system to be used for the 2004 primary.

Once the legislation reaches the governor’s desk, he has 20 days in which to take action.
