Gov. Gary Locke Announces Appointments to Boards and Commissions

Gov. Gary Locke today announced appointments to the following boards and commissions:

Advisory Board of Plumbers

Gary S. Jensen of Ferndale has been appointed to a term ending July 1, 2006. Jensen is president and owner of Sullivan Plumbing, Inc. The Advisory Board of Plumbers advises the Department of Labor & Industries on standards for journeyman plumbers and hears appeals related to revoking certification.

Emergency Management Council

Washington State Patrol Chief Lowell Porter and Department of Ecology acting director Linda Hoffman have been appointed to serve at the pleasure of the governor. The Emergency Management Council advises the governor and the assistant director of Emergency Management on all matters relating to emergency services in the state and acts as an arbitration body to settle search and rescue claims between state and local government.

Emergency Medical Services/Trauma Care Steering Committee

Captain Timothy Braniff of Olympia has been appointed to a term ending Aug. 15, 2004. Braniff is captain of the Washington State Patrol Field Operations Bureau. The Emergency Medical Services/Trauma Care Steering Committee reviews the requirements for pre-hospital emergency and ambulance services throughout the state and the proposed administrative rules relating to emergency medical services; reviews regional emergency management plans and recommends changes; and advises on rules regarding poison information centers.

Family Practice Education Advisory Board

Michael D. Wilson of Spokane has been reappointed to a term ending Sept. 7, 2007. The Family Practice Education Advisory Board advises the University of Washington School of Medicine on implementing education programs in family medicine throughout the state.

State Council on Aging

Frank W. Cardwell of Ephrata has been appointed to a term ending Sept. 15, 2006. Cardwell is retired from the United States Air Force and Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. The State Council on Aging advises the governor and Department of Social and Health Services on policies, programs and services affecting older people.

State Interagency Coordinating Council for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities & Their Families

Karen Kershaw and Karen Walker, both of Olympia, have been appointed to serve at the pleasure of the governor. Kershaw is the project coordinator for Washington Integrated Services Enhancement for Children with Special Health Care Needs at the state Department of Health. Walker is a program supervisor in the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

David Thorngate of Spokane has been appointed to a term ending Jan. 6, 2007. Thorngate is assistant coordinator of the Spokane County Parent Coalition. The State Interagency Coordinating Council for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities & Their Families advises and assists the Department of Social and Health Services and participating state agencies on coordinating, developing and implementing policies dealing with early-intervention services.

Washington Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect

Marla Wood of Vancouver has been appointed to a term ending June 30, 2007. Wood is a K-12 extended learning and parent training program specialist for the Vancouver School District. The Washington Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse contracts to establish community-based education and service programs aimed at preventing child abuse and neglect; assists with the exchange of information; consults with state agencies; establishes the Children’s Trust Fund; and adopts necessary and appropriate rules.

Washington State School for the Blind Board of Trustees

Annabelle Fitts of Seattle has been appointed to a term ending July1, 2007. Fitts is a retired teacher of the visually impaired. The State School for the Blind serves the education needs of visually impaired and blind students from throughout the state. The school develops comprehensive curriculum to maximize and develop students’ skills to live, work and be capable, contributing, independent citizens.
