Gov. Gary Locke’s Statement on Heightened National Security Threat

Gov. Gary Locke today issued the following statement on the heightening of the national threat condition to orange, or high risk, the second highest level:

“I received advance notice early this morning of the Department of Homeland Security’s adjustment of the national threat level to orange, or high risk. At this time, there is no specific threat in our state. The orange threat condition is for the country as a whole. Our state, however, is taking appropriate steps in response to this threat.

“With the heightened national threat, we’ve immediately raised our state homeland security level and ordered all state agencies to implement specific, comprehensive security measures in accordance with this increased threat level. I also urge all businesses in the state and all city, county and tribal governments to take appropriate actions.

“As part of the increased security measures, the state is providing additional staffing where necessary. There will be heightened monitoring of critical facilities and locations. Citizens should remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious packages, vehicles or activities. Citizens will experience increased security at airports and borders, and I encourage people to be understanding and patient.

“I want to assure the people of our state that we are taking the necessary precautions for this increased threat condition, and we are continuing our close coordination with federal and local officials.”

Citizens and businesses may learn more about developing enhanced security plans by visiting the state Emergency Management Division’s Web site at www.emd.wa.gov and by clicking on “Homeland Security.”
