Gov. Gary Locke Announces Appointments to Education Boards

Gov. Gary Locke today announced the appointments of Jamila Norris of Seattle to the Professional Educator Standards Board, Julianne Hanner of Montesano and Asbury Lockett of Renton to the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board (WTECB), and Miguel Bocanegra of Seattle to the Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Norris will serve on the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) for a term ending May 31, 2004. She is a teacher at Cooper Elementary School in Seattle and a member of the Seattle School District’s Professional Learning Task Force. Norris received her bachelor’s degree from Washington State University.

The PESB is charged with helping to ensure the highest standards for all educators certified by the state, including teachers, principals, administrators and other education specialists.

Hanner will serve on the WTECB for a term ending June 30, 2006. She is the owner/operator of a McDonald’s in Grays Harbor and is on the board of directors for the Grays Harbor Chamber of Commerce and the Association of Washington Business. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Lockett will serve on the WTECB for a term ending June 30, 2007. He is a project manager for Washington Manufacturing Services and a member of the Kent Chamber of Commerce and the Association for Manufacturing Excellence. He has a bachelor’s degree from Stanford and a master of business administration from the University of California at Berkeley.

The WTCEB works in partnership with business, labor, local workforce development councils, and other state agencies to address the workforce development challenges facing the state’s employers and workers.

Bocanegra will serve in the student position on the Higher Education Coordinating Board for a term ending June 30, 2004. He is a student at the University of Washington School of Law and a recipient of the Beinecke Brothers Memorial Fellowship. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in 2001.

The HEC Board represents the broad public interest in higher education and is dedicated to expanding higher education opportunities in Washington.
