Gov. Gary Locke Announces Appointments to Higher Education Coordinating Board

Gov. Gary Locke today announced the appointments of Jerry Quinn Lee of Mercer Island and Dr. Sam Smith of Seattle to the Higher Education Coordinating (HEC) Board. The HEC Board represents the broad public interest in higher education and is dedicated to expanding higher education opportunities in Washington.

Lee will serve on the HEC Board for a term ending June 30, 2007. He is the chief executive officer of MulvannyG2 Architecture, one of the 10 largest architectural firms in the United States. Lee is involved in many charitable organizations, including Homestead, the Washington Education Foundation, and Communities in Schools, and his firm sponsors projects and scholarships at many colleges and universities. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Portland State University and a bachelor of architecture degree from the University of Oregon.

Smith will serve on the HEC Board for a term ending June 30, 2007. He was president of Washington State University from 1985 to 2000, where he was recognized nationally as a leader in distance education and extended degree programs. He also helped develop WSU's branch campus system to further expand access to higher education. Smith received a bachelor’s degree and doctorate in plant pathology from the University of California at Berkeley.
