Gov. Gary Locke Awards 24 Foster Children with 2003-04 Governor’s Scholarships

Gov. Gary Locke today awarded Washington State Governor’s Scholarships to 24 children in foster care. Locke established the program in 2001 to help children in state-recognized foster, group and kinship care enroll in and complete college in Washington state.

“You are the sons and daughters of Washington. We are here today because we have faith in you. We believe in you and care about you,” Locke told the recipients. “You have faced some obstacles in your lives and success involves overcoming them. You’ve worked hard and seized opportunities. Congratulations on coming this far, and keep going until you reach your dreams.”

The scholarship program is primarily funded by proceeds from the annual Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament, which raised more than $260,000 for this year’s scholarships. An additional $30,000 was contributed from the Gathering of the Governors. Bob Craves and Ann Ramsay-Jenkins, co-founders of the Washington Education Foundation, were also on hand to commend the students.

“The Washington Education Foundation is honored to manage this program and do our part in helping to provide meaningful futures for these students,” Ramsay-Jenkins said. “We want to provide these students with support and resources. Ours is an organization that cares about each and every student.”

Fifty students applied for the Governor’s Scholarship Program this year. Additional eligibility criteria can be found on the Washington Education Foundation’s Web site at www.waedfoundation.org.
