Gov. Gary Locke’s Statements Regarding the Bush Administration’s Ultimatum and the Orange Threat Condition

OLYMPIA – Gov. Gary Locke today issued the following statement regarding the Bush administration’s ultimatum to Saddam Hussein:

“It is my hope that Saddam Hussein will heed the Administration’s warning for the sake of the people of Iraq and the world. We have given him every chance to settle this matter peacefully and without conflict. Now it's up to him.”

The governor also released the following statement regarding the heightening of the national threat condition to orange:

“This afternoon, the Bush Administration again raised the national threat condition to orange, or ‘high risk.’

“At this time, there is no specific threat in our state. The orange threat condition is for the country as a whole, and our state is taking appropriate steps in accordance with this alert.

“These steps call for increasing security measures and providing additional staffing where necessary. There will be heightened monitoring of facilities and locations that may possibly be at risk.

“I want to assure the people of our state that we are taking the necessary precautions for this threat condition, and we are continuing our close coordination with federal and local officials.”
