Gov. Gary Locke’s Statement on Space Shuttle Tragedy

OLYMPIA – Feb. 1, 2003 – Gov. Gary Locke today issued the following statement on the tragic loss of the space shuttle Columbia and its crew, including Washington native Lt. Col. Michael P. Anderson, 43, the shuttle’s payload commander:

“This tragic loss touches our nation and our state in a very personal way.

“For Washington, we lost a native son, Michael Anderson of Spokane, who served as a role model and hero for children throughout the state.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to Michael Anderson’s family and friends – and to all those who lost someone dear in this tragedy.

“These brave astronauts died while pursuing a noble cause – the exploration of space and the resulting countless benefits to humankind.

“May we never forget the bravery and contributions these astronauts have made to our world.”

In memory of Anderson and the Columbia crew, Locke today ordered all state flags lowered to half-staff.
