Gov. Gary Locke Stresses Need for Transportation Improvements

Gov. Gary Locke today reiterated the need for a solution to the state’s transportation problems at his weekly news conference in Olympia.

“Yesterday was not the end of our efforts to improve transportation,” Locke said. “It was the beginning. We will not achieve economic vitality for our state without a safe, reliable transportation system. We must move forward. We must take responsibility for the future of our state.”

The governor also said he would begin meeting with the Democratic and Republican leaders from the state Legislature as soon as the election results are final. The governor wants to begin work on a new transportation package that addresses voters’ cost and accountability concerns.

“Hundreds of thousands of people across the state said they want transportation improvements; they just didn’t want the package that was on the ballot,” Locke said.

Locke also stressed that any legislative effort would be a bipartisan one.

“We will improve transportation in this state. We will do it by working together - Democrats and Republicans. And we will keep working until we achieve a good plan to get us there,” Locke said.
