Gov. Gary Locke Launches Web Site to Highlight Statewide Sept. 11 Observances

OLYMPIA-- Gov. Gary Locke today unveiled a comprehensive Web site that provides the public with information on the Sept. 11 observances around the state.

The special site, titled “Washington Remembers,” documents Sept. 11 efforts that are happening on the local, state and national level. Among the site’s features are:

· Details on the “Washington State September 11 Memorial & Procession” in Seattle
· A statewide calendar of local events with descriptions and contact information
· Related links to other Sept. 11 observances as well as to those on homeland security
· Names of the “everyday heroes” that will represent each county in the state memorial and procession (The Governor’s Office will announce the “everyday heroes” soon)

The Governor’s Office will continually update the Web page as new information becomes available, especially on city- and county-sponsored Sept. 11 observances.

The governor will commemorate last year’s Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by hosting a statewide observance “Washington State September 11 Memorial & Procession” in Seattle.

The statewide memorial will begin at noon on Sept. 11 at Westlake Center in downtown Seattle and will include the governor, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, King County Executive Ron Sims, religious leaders, rescue workers, choral groups and others.

Following the memorial, Locke and others will lead a one-mile procession down Fourth Avenue to several city-sponsored events at Seattle Center. The procession will feature an “everyday hero” from each of Washington’s 39 counties who will carry his or her county flag in the procession.

More information is available on the governor’s Sept. 11 Web page at http://governor.wa.gov/remember/remember.htm.
