Locke selects Tony Molica to direct state Lottery

OLYMPIA – Gov. Gary Locke today named Anthony S. Molica, director of sales at the California Lottery, to direct the Washington State Lottery.

Molica, 52, has worked at the California Lottery since its inception in 1985. As director of sales, Molica manages a staff of 260, nearly 19,000 retail locations and $2.9 billion in annual sales. He also has served the California Lottery as director of sales planning, chief of key accounts and district sales manager.

“Tony’s strong commitment to public service and his extensive management and marketing experience will help us evolve our state’s lottery business,” said Locke. “I am confident that Tony will make an excellent contribution to the administration. Through his leadership, I look forward to increased revenues for Washington’s student achievement and education construction funds.”

Molica will replace Robert Benson, Jr., who is retiring from state government.

“I am honored that Governor Locke has entrusted me to lead the Washington State Lottery,” said Molica. “I look forward to working creatively with the staff to envision and execute new philosophies to continually grow lottery sales for the benefit of education in Washington.”

Molica received a bachelor’s degree in social sciences from the California State University at Sacramento. He also earned elementary and secondary teaching credentials and taught both junior and senior high school. Prior to joining the California Lottery, Molica owned and operated his own businesses.

Established in 1982, the Washington State Lottery has contributed more than $1.9 billion to the student achievement fund, the education construction fund and the state general fund. All Lottery revenues previously directed to the general fund now support the student achievement and education construction funds.

Molica will take his post at the Washington State Lottery on June 10, and will earn an annual salary of $107,000.
