Locke signs 25 bills into law

OLYMPIA – Gov. Gary Locke today signed into law 25 bills on topics including community revitalization, cherry harvest labor camps, volunteer firefighters, state retirement systems, domestic violence and human trafficking.

House Bill No. 1248, sponsored by Rep. Lynn Kessler (D-24), will allow victims of domestic violence or stalking to receive unemployment insurance benefits.

“I’m pleased to sign into law HB 1248 to help victims of domestic violence,” said Locke. “Unemployment benefits for domestic violence and stalking victims, who quit work to protect themselves and their family members, will help ensure their livelihood while searching for new employment.”

Substitute House Bill No. 2381, sponsored by Rep. Velma Veloria (D-11), creates a task force to evaluate the state’s progress in preventing human trafficking and to recommend victim support and assistance.

“Human trafficking is a serious worldwide problem and we must do more to protect victims in Washington,” Locke said. “The task force on human trafficking created by HB 2381 will provide useful information for trafficking victims, policymakers and service providers.”
