Gov. Locke’s statement on House passage of transportation package

“I am pleased by today’s vote by the state House of Representatives to address Washington’s transportation mess.

“With today’s action, the state House of Representatives recognized that strategic improvements to our transportation system are essential to the state’s economy.

“The transportation plan passed by the state House of Representatives provides funding to cut traffic congestion, improves highway safety and freight mobility, makes critical improvements to our state ferry system, and takes a number of steps to ensure a new level of accountability for on-time, on-budget project delivery.

“I appreciate the leadership of state Representative Ruth Fisher, chair of the House Transportation Committee, Speaker Frank Chopp, and the many legislators who worked hard to develop this reasonable plan. They should be commended for their commitment to the future of our state.

“As both business and labor leaders serving on the Washington Competitiveness Council reiterated yesterday, the Legislature must act immediately to fix our state’s transportation mess. I hope the state Senate will act quickly as well, so we don’t lose any more time. Let’s get the job done here in Olympia.”
