Locke signs bill to repeal local motor vehicle excise taxes

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today signed into law Senate Bill No. 6036 repealing the local motor vehicle excise tax.

The bill passed both the state Senate and state House of Representatives with a bipartisan margin.

“This bill repeals the local motor vehicle excise tax that the 2000 Legislature and the voters, via Initiative 695, intended to repeal,” Locke said. “For this reason, I am signing this bill into law.”

“I would like to thank Senator Tracey Eide for her sponsorship of this bill,” Locke said.

With the governor’s signature, the legislation takes effect immediately.

Locke also today signed House Bill No. 2782 relating to implementing the results of the 1995-2000 actuarial experience study. While current state pension contribution rates were adopted by the 2001 Legislature, HB 2782 adopts new, lower rates starting April 1, 2002, and effective until June 30, 2003. The new law will reduce costs to the state by $76 million over the rest of the biennium and also reduces costs to local governments by $34 million for this period.
