Gov. Locke’s statement on House passage of anti-terrorism legislation

“Today’s passage by the state House of Representatives of new laws that deal with threats to the safety and health of our communities is great news.

“The events of September 11, 2001, had an enormous impact on our nation. This afternoon’s votes in the state House of Representatives will help state and local authorities prevent and respond to terrorist acts, ensure that threats of terrorism are investigated and terrorists are held fully accountable for their acts.

“At the same time, we will continue to protect the liberties and freedoms that make this country so unique. The bill the state House of Representatives passed this afternoon, Substitute House Bill 2879, is a measured, responsible approach. I hope the state Senate will give it careful consideration.

“I would like to thank Attorney General Christine Gregoire for working with me to draft the legislation and state House Select Committee on Community Security Chair Representative Christopher Hurst and ranking minority member Representative Barbara Lisk, as well as other members of the committee, for their diligence and leadership to pass this significant legislation.”
