Locke reassures citizens after bringing officials together for briefing on potential terrorist threats

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today reassured citizens after bringing federal, state and local officials together for a briefing on potential terrorist threats.

“We are aware of the unsettling and sometimes contradictory reports this week of potential terrorism threats to Washington state,” Locke said. “I requested a briefing with the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office this afternoon and invited other state and local officials to join us. It is important that we all hear the same information at the same time, first-hand from federal officials.”

The governor reiterated that there are no new credible threats against the state of Washington or its facilities.

“We have not substantiated anything more than what we learned or saw earlier this week,” Locke said, referring to the tourist-type photos of Seattle found on a computer in Afghanistan.

Joining the governor for the briefing were representatives from the FBI, the U.S. Attorney General’s office, the Washington National Guard, the Washington State Patrol, King County and the city of Seattle. Participating officials included:

  • U.S. Attorney John McKay
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent-in-Charge Charles Mandigo
  • Adjutant General of the Washington National Guard –
    Major General Timothy Lowenberg

  • Washington State Patrol Chief Ronald Serpas
  • King County Executive Ron Sims
  • King County Sheriff David Reichert
  • Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels
  • Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske

“While there is not an imminent threat against our state, the evidence recovered in the caves of Afghanistan must not and is not being taken lightly,” the governor said. “We remain vigilant and are fully prepared to protect Washingtonians against any potential threat of terrorism. And, together, we have reinforced the importance of ongoing and timely coordination and communication among federal, state and local officials.”
