Locke appoints Isaki as special assistant for business

OLYMPIA – Gov. Gary Locke today appointed Paul Isaki, his chief of staff, to serve as his special assistant for business.

Isaki will leave his post as chief of staff and assume his new role in the administration effective Dec. 1. Helen Howell, Locke’s deputy chief of staff, will serve as acting chief of staff until Locke appoints a successor.

“For some time I have been focused on how to best deal with major challenges to our state’s economic future,” Locke said. “We must, for example, foster long-term economic growth in Washington state by securing such projects as production of the Boeing sonic cruiser. We also must ensure that Washington state maintains and cultivates a vigorous and healthy business climate so that family wage jobs for Washingtonians are created.”

“These and other issues will be addressed by the Washington Competitiveness Council in its final report next month,” the governor continued. “However, I need someone I know and trust, as well as someone who knows state government and understands the state’s business community, to ensure these recommendations are effectively implemented and not ignored.”

“Paul Isaki is the person best suited for this vital role,” Locke noted. “Not only is he a longtime friend and trusted advisor, he also has served as a public servant and businessman. With Paul accepting the new assignment, however, I must appoint a new chief of staff.”

“Paul has served as an effective chief of staff in difficult times,” the governor remarked. “From the Nisqually earthquake through the legislative session to the September 11 terrorist attacks, Paul has guided my administration with a steady hand. I am confident he will serve us well in his new role.”

In accepting the appointment, Isaki thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve as chief of staff and said that he very much looked forward to tackling the “tough challenges that this latest assignment brings.”

“It has been a pleasure to serve this administration and I relish the opportunity to make Washington state the nation’s business leader,” Isaki said.

Isaki has served as Locke’s chief of staff since January 2001. Prior to that he served as the governor’s special trade representative. In that position, he sought to help Washington companies by removing unfair trade barriers in foreign markets.

From 1993 to 1999 , Isaki was a vice president of the Seattle Mariners where he led the team’s effort to develop SAFECO Field.

Isaki previously served as Gov. Booth Gardner’s chief advisor on business issues and as his director of the Department of Trade and Economic Development.
