EXECUTIVE ORDER  72-11

Today, our state's first citizens, the American Indians, are seeking a greater voice in their own destinies through self-determination and representation in government, society and economy. It is appropriate and beneficial for both sovereign Indian Nations and the state of Washington to evaluate and coordinate more closely with respect to meeting the needs of Indian communities.

To assist in the understanding and communication of such issues, it is imperative that Indian representatives be involved to present their ideas, talents and recommendations.

Now, Therefore, I, Daniel J. Evans, Governor of the state of Washington, do hereby constitute the Governor's Indian Advisory Council of the state of Washington, to be composed of representatives of the Indian Nations, Nonreservation Tribes and Urban Indian Organizations to be recognized by the Governor. The Council is directed to examine and define issues pertaining to the rights and needs of American Indians of Washington State, and to make rrecommendationsto the Governor and state agencies with respect to desirable changes in program, policies and law. Staff assistance will be provided to the Council through the Office of the Governor, or such state agency as may be designated.

Departments of state government are requested to provide their utmost support and cooperation to the Council. Local government officials and private citizens are requested to lend the Council their utmost support and cooperation also, as needed to accomplish its goals.

Members of the Governor's Indian Advisory Council of the state of Washington shall serve without compensation, but shall receive $25 per-diem for each day or major portion thereof plus reimbursement of actual travel expenses incurred at the rate of 10 cents per mile.
