Gov. Gregoire meets with 81st Brigade before deployment

For Immediate Release: August 7, 2008

Gregoire recognizes soldiers for their courage and commitment

YAKIMA Gov. Chris Gregoire today met with thousands of soldiers at the Yakima Training Center as they readied to deploy to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The men and women of the 81st Brigade are a brave reflection of Washingtons finest, Gregoire said. These soldiers have been here for us for both domestic emergency needs as well as to support U.S. missions in conflicts around the world. We applaud the heroic work they do and acknowledge their families, friends and colleagues who support them.

Under Department of Defense policy, the 81st is scheduled to be on federal active duty for 12 months. Its focus will be on convoy security and force protection operations.

The citizen soldiers of the 81st are true patriots their commitment to service and duty is nothing short of inspirational. They will proudly represent our great state as they serve with honor and distinction, said Maj. Gen. Timothy J. Lowenberg, the states adjutant general.

Gregoire reminded Washingtonians that the soldiers of the Washington National Guard are our friends, neighbors and co-workers, and deserve utmost support. She will be traveling to local 81st Brigade farewell ceremonies in Everett and Auburn later this month.

The 81st is headquartered in Seattle, but is comprised of units from around the state and a battalion from the California Army National Guard. Approximately 2,400 citizen solders from Washington and about 900 from California make up the force. The 81st also served in Iraq from March 2004 to March 2005.
