Gov. Gregoire announces boards and commissions appointments

Citizens appointed from East Wenatchee, Lacey, Lakewood, Port Orchard, Pullman, Quilcene, Randle and Tukwila

OLYMPIA � Gov. Chris Gregoire today announced appointments to the following boards and commissions:

Higher Education Coordinating Board
Earl Hale of Lacey has been reappointed to a term effective July 1, 2008, ending June 30, 2012. Hale is a consultant on higher education policy and governance issues for the Ford Foundation. He joined the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges in 1970 and was serving as its executive director when he retired in 2006. He currently serves on the boards of the Olympia YMCA and Earth Share Washington, and has previously served as chairman of the National Council of State Directors of Community and Junior Colleges.

Ethelda Burke of Tukwila has been reappointed to a term effective July 1, 2008, ending June 30, 2012. Burke is superintendent of the Tukwila School District. She is currently a member of the University of Washington Professional Education Advisory Board, Key Bank Southern Puget Sound District Advisory Board, Tacoma Youth Symphony Board and Cultural Council of Greater Tacoma.

Nancy Biery of Quilcene has been appointed to a term effective July 1, 2008, ending June 30, 2012. Biery is the owner of Nancy Biery Associates, a public relations, project management and consulting firm. Previously she served as the director of external affairs for former Gov. Gary Locke.

Sasha Sleiman of East Wenatchee has been reappointed to a term effective July 1, 2008, ending June 30, 2009. Sleiman is a student at Western Washington University. She currently serves as vice president of finance for the Washington Student Lobby and was the legislative liaison from 2006�07 for the Associated Students of Western Washington University.

The board studies, plans and coordinates higher education among various institutions and agencies in the state.

University of Washington Board of Regents
Jean-Paul Willynck of Lakewood has been appointed as student regent to a term effective July 8, 2008, ending June 30, 2009. Willynck attends the University of Washington Tacoma and will graduate in 2009 with a B.A. in urban studies. He was on the dean�s list in fall 2007 and winter 2008. He is involved in several university and community activities, serves as the director of public relations of the Urban Studies Club, is the founding chair of the Commuters Association and was a participant in the Sustainability Summit 2008.

The board of regents serves as the governing body for the University of Washington. Student regents serve a one-year term.

Washington State University Board of Regents
Derick En�Wezoh of Pullman has been appointed as student regent to a term effective July 8, 2008, ending June 30, 2009. En�Wezoh is a student in the College of Veterinary Medicine, majoring in neuroscience with a pre-med emphasis. He will be a junior during the 2008�09 academic year. He was a member of DECA and the National Honor Society while in high school. At WSU, he served as Associated Students of Washington State University senator in his sophomore year and volunteers with several organizations, including Relay for Life, the American Red Cross and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. He is also a volunteer with senior citizen organizations in Pullman.

The board of regents serves as the governing body for Washington State University. Student regents serve a one-year term.

Centralia Community College Board of Trustees
Margaret Sundstrom of Randle has been reappointed to a term effective July 8, 2008, ending Sept. 30, 2012. Sundstrom is an assistance specialist with the Lewis-Mason-Thurston Area Agency on Aging. She is a member of the Centralia College East Advisory Council, Morton Lions Club and the board of directors of the White Pass School District.

The trustee board serves as the governing body for the community college.

Olympic Community College Board of Trustees
Beverly Cheney of Port Orchard has been appointed to a term effective July 8, 2008, ending Sept. 30, 2012. Cheney retired in June 2008 as the superintendent of the South Kitsap School District. She served several years with the Kent School District in various roles, including elementary school teacher and principal, executive director of Community Connections and assistant superintendent of elementary education. She is a member of the Port Orchard Rotary Club and sits on the board of directors for Leadership Kitsap.
