For Immediate Release: June 21, 2008

Seattle chapter celebrates 15th anniversary of race

SEATTLE Gov. Chris Gregoire today participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Before the annual walk, Gregoire spoke to breast cancer survivors and activists who gathered to raise awareness and funding to find a cure.

It is an honor to be among all of you here today. Whether you are a survivor like me, or a friend, family member or colleague of someone living with breast cancer, we are all touched by this disease, Gregoire said. We walk together to bring hope and work for a cure.

Early detection saves lives, and I can say that from personal experience. Early detection saved my life, Gregoire said. I encourage everyone to reconfirm their commitment to being active in supporting breast cancer prevention and early detection. Ask the women in your family: Are you checking?

Gregoire has promoted important health initiatives, such as the Womens Center, which is run by the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Gregoire has also supported biomedical and life science facilities across the state through the Life Sciences Discovery Fund, a trust fund that invests in the next generation of research in predictive and preventive health care.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation raises awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. This is the 15th Annual Race for the Cure in Seattle.
