Gov. Gregoires statement on statewide earthquake drill

For Immediate Release: April 21, 2008

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire today issued the following statement on Tuesdays statewide earthquake drill.

Mondays 3.4 magnitude earthquake in Snohomish County serves as a strong reminder of Washingtons vulnerability to earthquakes. I urge state and local agencies, schools, businesses and private individuals to participate in Tuesdays statewide earthquake preparedness drill.

The statewide drill will be initiated through an Emergency Alert System message on broadcast media between 9:45 a.m. and 10 a.m.

I encourage all citizens to increase their knowledge and awareness of proper safety measures to follow before, during and after a natural or man-made disaster.

Im asking agencies to strengthen their ability to respond during emergencies by being able to quickly identify and mobilize key responders and resources. The ability to deploy the right people and resources in the early stages of an emergency could significantly reduce the loss of life and property damage in an emergency.

Washington remains vulnerable to natural and man-made disasters; more than 1000 earthquakes occur in our state each year. State residents especially should prepare themselves to be self-sufficient for at least three days following a natural or man-made disaster.
