Gov. Christine Gregoire announces appointments to boards and commissions

OLYMPIA � May 16, 2005 � Gov. Christine Gregoire today announced appointments to the following boards and commissions:

Community and Economic Revitalization Board
The Honorable Julie Anderson of Tacoma has been appointed to a term effective May 5, 2005, ending Sept. 2, 2008. Anderson is a council member for the city of Tacoma. Peter Han of Seattle has been appointed to a term effective May 5, 2005, ending Sept. 2, 2008. Han works for Microsoft as the lead manager for the Server Licensing division of Worldwide Licensing and Pricing. The board�s objectives are to strengthen the economy in areas of the state that have experienced high unemployment rates or below-average economic growth, to encourage economic diversification within our state, and to provide incentives for expansion of employment opportunities.

Developmental Disabilities Endowment Governing Board
Phillip Ruggles of Spokane has been reappointed to a term effective April 22, 2005, ending March 15, 2009. Margaret-Lee Thompson of Redmond has been reappointed to a term effective May 5, 2005, ending March 15, 2009. The governing board is responsible for designing and administering the developmental disabilities endowment.

Eastern Washington University Board of Trustees
Stacey Roestel of Cheney has been appointed as student trustee to a term effective June 1, 2005, ending May 31, 2006. Roestel is studying computer science and will graduate in June 2005. The board of trustees is the governing body for Eastern Washington University.

Evergreen State College Board of Trustees
Jayne Kaszynski of Olympia has been appointed as student trustee to a term effective June 1, 2005, ending May 31, 2006. Kaszynski is a graduate student working on her masters in public administration. The board of trustees is the governing body for The Evergreen State College.

Fire Protection Policy Board
The Honorable Jennifer Gregerson of Mukilteo has been reappointed to a term effective April 22, 2005, ending April 15, 2008. Dean Hosni of Olympia has been appointed to a term effective April 22, 2005, ending April 15, 2008. Hosni is a section manager for State Farm Insurance and lives in Olympia, Wash. The board sets policy on fire-protection matters, and advises and assists the chief of the State Patrol and the director of Fire Protection on all fire-protection matters and in developing a budget.

Governor�s Council of Economic Advisers
David Nierenberg of Camas has been appointed to a term effective May 13, 2005, ending at the governor�s pleasure. He is president of Nierenberg Investment Management Co., which manages The D3 Family Funds, a family of private investment partnerships that seek long-term capital gain through investment in undervalued micro-cap domestic public equities. The council advises the governor on state financial matters, including the state budget, tax policy, the issuance of debt and debt management, cash management, and other fiscal matters that reflect upon the overall financial condition of the state.

Grant County Boundary Review Board
Donald McDowall of Moses Lake has been appointed to a term effective April 27, 2005, ending Jan. 31, 2009. McDowall is a retired Grant County assessor and is member of the American Legion Post No. 209 and Washington Association of County Officials. Boundary review boards have jurisdiction over municipal annexations, incorporations, disincorporations and creation or annexation of certain special districts. The boards also have jurisdiction over extensions of sewer and water services outside the city or district.

Health Insurance Pool
William Perkins of Olympia has been appointed to a term effective May 31, 2005, ending May 31, 2008. Perkins is president of GHB Insurance. The board provides access to health insurance for people who are unable to obtain coverage in the private marketplace. The board of directors develops and approves a uniform screening mechanism for subscribers to enter the pool. The board also manages the pool, sets assessments on member health plans, and collects premiums from subscribers.

Veterans� Affairs Advisory Committee
Lloyd Burroughs of Tacoma has been appointed to a term effective May 5, 2005, ending July 1, 2005. Burroughs served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1984 and worked for the Department of the Navy as a supervisory data technician and is the Washington State Commander for the National Association for Black Veterans. The committee advises the governor and director of the Department of Veterans Affairs on state programs related to veterans, their dependents and survivors.

University of Washington Board of Regents
Will Rasmussen of Seattle has been appointed as student trustee to a term effective June 1, 2005, ending May 31, 2006. Rasmussen is studying law and will receive his Juris Doctor in June 2006. The board of trustees is the governing body for the University of Washington.

Washington State University Board of Regents
Justin Leighton of Pullman has been appointed as student trustee to a term effective June 1, 2005, ending May 31, 2006. Leighton is studying agriculture education and will graduate in June 2006. The board of trustees is the governing body for the Washington State University. .

Washington Commission on National and Community Service
Krystal Wood of Tacoma has been appointed to a term effective May 5, 2005, ending Feb. 15, 2008. Wood is a student at Seattle University studying political science and journalism. The commission implements the federal National and Community Trust Act of 1993, which created AmeriCorps and initiates activities or projects that expand and promote the concept of service beyond the scope of federal resources, and provides leadership and vision with local volunteer organizations, civic and community groups and units of government to make service a part of the lives of all of the citizens of the state.
