Gov. Gregoire's statement on historically low unemployment rate

For Immediate Release: February 26, 2008

OLYMPIA – Gov. Chris Gregoire today said that although Washington’s economy cannot avoid the negative effects of a slowing national economy, positive job numbers are further evidence that our state economy remains healthy.

“This near all-time low unemployment rate shows that Washington’s economy continues to be in a stronger position than the rest of the nation. The job market here is robust, and businesses are prospering. There’s no question that Washington is open for business,” said Gov. Gregoire.

“Our efforts to promote Washington-made goods here and abroad have increased our exports and allowed Washington to stay competitive in the global economy and maintain our quality of life.

“Even with historically low unemployment rates, I know there are people impacted by a slowing housing market and looking for work. We must continue our focus on investing in education and job training so we can provide a skilled work force to attract new business to Washington and keep the jobs we have.”
