Statement from Governor Gregoire on Budget Recommendation by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Education

For Immediate Release: February 26, 2007

OLYMPIA The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Education today released budget recommendations for K-12 education and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, all higher education institutions, the Higher Education Coordinating Board, School for the Deaf, School for the Blind, Work Force Training and Education Coordinating Board, and the Department of Early Learning.

In response, Governor Gregoire issued the following statement:

I thank the committee members for their hard work in creating this budget proposal, and I will examine their proposal to determine if it aligns with our top priorities of improving math and science, investing in early learning, keeping higher education accessible and affordable, and making sure that Washington students have the education and training they need to get the best jobs.

We need to do more than just stick with the status quo. Education is the single most important investment we can make for the future of our state, and now is the time to invest in real reform.
