Governor Gregoire Announces Boards and Commissions Appointments

Citizens appointed from Bellevue, Cashmere, Lacey, Lake Forest Park, Lakewood, Leavenworth, Port Townsend, Redmond, Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma

OLYMPIA - Governor Chris Gregoire today announced appointments to the following boards and commissions:

State Board of Health
Treuman Katz of Bellevue has been appointed Chair of the State Board of Health, effective January 16, 2007, ending July 1, 2009. Mr. Katz was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Children�s Hospital and Regional Medical Center for over 25 years before retiring in October 2005. He serves on the boards of the American Heart Association and Bastyr University. Mr. Katz received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Berkeley and has Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University.

The Board is the primary entity for state health policy development and is required to produce a biennial report delineating the state's health priorities.

Building Code Council
Pete Devries of Leavenworth has been reappointed to a term effective January 11, 2007, ending January 5, 2010. Mr. Devries serves on the Leavenworth City Council and is chair of the City Finance Committee. He is involved in the Cascade Medical Center Foundation, the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce and several Cascade School district committees. Mr. Devries was the President of Big Bend Community College.

The council adopts and amends building codes and provides technical and general assistance to building officials regarding adopted codes.

Correctional Industries Board of Directors
Waylin McCurley of Lakewood has been appointed to a term effective January 11, 2007, ending September 25, 2010. Mr. McCurley is a vice president for Rainier Pacific Bank and a fire commissioner for the Pierce County - Lakewood Fire Department. He is on the United Way Board of Directors, a volunteer reading tutor at Northeast Tacoma Elementary and a Korean interpreter for the Fife School District.

The board advises the Department of Corrections on programs designed to offer work experience and training of inmates and on investing funds from enterprises and work programs.

Pipeline Safety Committee
Grant Jensen of Redmond has been reappointed to a term effective January 11, 2007, ending July 31, 2010. Mr. Jensen is the Puget Sound District Manager for Williams Northwest Pipeline. He was an area construction superintendent and supervised projects in Washington and Oregon, ranging from emergency stream bank repairs, meter station enlargements and pressure upgrades to systems.

The committee advises the Utilities and Transportation Commission and other appropriate federal, state and local government agencies on matters relating to hazardous liquid and gas pipeline safety, routing, construction, operations and maintenance.

State Board of Education
Eric Liu of Seattle has been reappointed to a term effective February 1, 2007, ending January 30, 2011. Mr. Liu hosts a local NPR showed called �the Power of the Voice� and teaches at the University of Washington�s Evans School of Public Affairs. He serves on the board of the Seattle Public Library, the Asian Community Leadership Foundation and the League of Education Voters.
Kristina Mayer of Port Townsend has been reappointed to a term effective February 1, 2007, ending January 30, 2011. Ms. Mayer leads the KLMayer Consulting Group, Inc., which helps philanthropic organizations clarify and achieve their goals. She holds a K � 12 teaching certificate, a PK-12 administrative certificate and is a registered counselor.

The board develops policies for state education laws created by the Legislature and works with government and education organizations to support student achievement, student learning goals, student and system accountability and basic education assistance.

King County Boundary Review Board
Roger Loschen of Lake Forest Park has been appointed to a term effective February 1, 2007, ending January 31, 2011. Mr. Loschen is a retired journalist for the Seattle Times and was the Mayor of Lake Forest Park from 1992- 1995. He is a member of the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation and was on the team that created the Washington Growth Management Act.

The board has jurisdiction over municipal annexations, incorporations, disincorporations and the creation or annexation of certain special districts. They also have jurisdiction over extensions of sewer and water services outside the city or district.

Pierce County Boundary Review Board
William Giddings of Tacoma has been reappointed to a term effective February 1, 2007, ending January 31, 2011. Mr. Giddings is a retired Professor Emeritus of chemistry at Pacific Lutheran University. He has served on the Parkland Area Advisory Commission and the Pierce County Planning Commission.

The board has jurisdiction over municipal annexations, incorporations, disincorporations and the creation or annexation of certain special districts. They also have jurisdiction over extensions of sewer and water services outside the city or district.

Spokane County Boundary Review Board
Phyllis Meyer of Spokane has been reappointed to a term effective February 1, 2007, ending January 31, 2011. Ms. Meyer is an attorney and has served on the City of Spokane Planning Commission, Spokane Preservation Advocates and the Spokane Club.

The board has jurisdiction over municipal annexations, incorporations, disincorporations and the creation or annexation of certain special districts. They also have jurisdiction over extensions of sewer and water services outside the city or district.

Governor�s Council on Substance Abuse
Margie Winters-Harris of Lacey has been appointed to a term effective January 4, 2007, ending August 3, 2009. Ms. Winters-Harris is a senior prevention coordinator for the Fort Lewis Army Substance Abuse Program and was recognized in June 2006 as the Department of Army Prevention Coordinator of the Year.

Renee Hunter of Cashmere has been appointed to a term effective January 4, 2007, ending August 3, 2009. Ms. Hunter is the Executive Director for Chelan � Douglas TOGETHER! for Drug Free Youth. She volunteers with the Chelan-Douglas Meth Task Force, is a member of the Washington Association for Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention and is the volunteer director of the Cashmere School District.

The council advises the Governor on issues and programs relating to substance abuse, assists with implementing strategies to support community efforts to reduce substance abuse and promotes public awareness and education.
