Statement from Governor Gregoire on Release of Washington Assessment of Student Learning Initial Results

For Immediate Release: June 8, 2006

�The results reported today reflect improvement in reading and writing and clear progress in math. I want to congratulate the success of the students, teachers and parents who have worked hard to reach graduation standards.

�There is obviously work to do and I know that this is a tough time for some students and their families. This is not a time to talk about statistics or trends but a time to discuss how we get the right help to each student who needs it.

�I firmly believe that every child can succeed if given the appropriate tools and instruction. This year we included resources in the budget so that students who need it can get help to pass the exam before graduation. I am committed to seeing that every student has the opportunity to meet standards for graduation and go on to achieve success.�
