Govrenor Gregoire Urges Moment of Remembrance for Construction Fatalities

For Immediate Release: December 15, 2006

OLYMPIA - Governor Chris Gregoire has declared Monday, December 18 as Construction Fatality Remembrance Day and urges all Washingtonians to join her in a voluntary moment of silence in honor of those who have died performing construction work activities.

Safe and healthy workplaces are everyones business they benefit workers, employers and the communities where we live, said Governor Gregoire. I urge all Washingtonians to join me in a moment of silence to remember those who have died and to increase safety awareness.

The number of construction fatalities in Washington doubled in the first 10 months of 2006, as compared to the whole of 2005; construction deaths have not been at this level in nearly a decade.
