Statement from Governor Gregoire on Closure of TransAlta Centralia Mining Operations

For Immediate Release: November 28, 2006

�While I understand this was a business decision, I was still disappointed to learn that TransAlta�s Centralia mining operations would be closed. I know the closure will be very difficult for everyone; the employees and the community of Centralia have worked hard to make the mine as economical as possible for as long as possible.

�My next priority is to make sure the workers receive the benefits and assistance they need to find new jobs. The Employment Security Department will continue to monitor the situation and is ready to provide an array of unemployment services. I hope the union and company will come to a settlement that looks out for the interests of the workers and their families.�
