Governor Gregoire Appoints Tribal Chairman to Western Washington University Board of Trustees

OLYMPIA - Governor Chris Gregoire today announced the appointment of W. �Ron� Allen of Sequim to the Board of Trustees at Western Washington University.

�Ron Allen�s proven leadership experience with the Jamestown S�Klallam Tribe will be a great addition to the already impressive breadth of leadership on the Western Board of Trustees,� said Governor Gregoire. �He has devoted his life to the community and I am pleased he will bring his passion for education to Western.�

Mr. Allen is the Chairman of the Jamestown S�Klallam Tribe, a position he has held for the past 29 years. He is also the Executive Director of the Tribe, responsible for the administration of all the Tribe's programs, including education, career development, social services, health, economic development, natural resource management and cultural/traditional affairs.

Mr. Allen led the Tribe from a zero resource base in 1982 to the current annual budget level of approximately $7 million and from a landless reservation into a land base of approximately 340 acres.

He is the former President of the National Congress of American Indians and a current delegate. He is also a delegate to the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians and the Point No Point Treaty Council. He was one of four U.S. commissioners the U.S./Canada Pacific Salmon Commission, which represents treaty Tribes from Washington and Oregon, and is the co-chair of the National Indian Policy Center at George Washington University.

Mr. Allen received his Associate in Arts degree in Accounting and his Associate in Applied Arts degree in Technical Engineering from Peninsula College. He received his double Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics from the University of Washington. He currently resides in Sequim.
