Governor Gregoire Announces Appointees to Growth Management Hearings Boards

For Immediate Release: June 22, 2006

OLYMPIA Governor Chris Gregoire today announced the appointment of Senator Joyce Mulliken (R, Moses Lake) to the Eastern Washington Growth Management Hearings Board. Senator Mulliken has been appointed to a term effective November 15, 2006, ending June 30, 2012.

I am pleased that Senator Mulliken will be joining eastern Washingtons Growth Management Hearings Board. She has been a thoughtful, objective representative for the 13th legislative district and I know that she will continue to be fair and dedicated as she serves on the growth management board, said Governor Gregoire.

Governor Gregoire also appointed James J. McNamara of Vancouver to the Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board. Mr. McNamara has been appointed to a term effective October 1, 2006, ending June 30, 2012.

Mr. McNamaras experience with land issues in Clark County, one of the fastest growing communities in Washington, will make him a valuable member of the growth management board and I look forward to his contributions to the decisions of the board, said Governor Gregoire.

This is an opportunity for myself, my district and for eastern Washington land owners that I just couldnt pass up, Mulliken said. To have the privilege and responsibility of bringing balance to this position is an honor. The many aspects of growth management will still allow me to have an impact on some of the most critical issues for 13th District residents, like transportation, economic development and land use.

Washingtons three growth management hearings boards rule on disputes that arise from county and city growth-planning policies. The Eastern Washington Hearings Board rules on disputes in all counties east of the Cascade crest, the Western Washington Hearings Board rules on disputes in all counties west of the Cascades (except for King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish) and the Central Puget Sound Hearings Board oversees King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties.

The members of the growth management hearings boards must consist of one attorney, one member of the public and one former local elected official. No more than two members may be from the same political party or the same county. The positions being filled by Senator Mulliken and Mr. McNamara must be filled by Republicans.
