Governor Gregoire Signs Bill to Keep Waterways and Aquatic Life Healthy

For Immediate Release: March 27, 2006

Bill will limit phosphorus in dishwashing detergent

SPOKANE Governor Chris Gregoire in Spokane today signed into law a measure that will help keep phosphorus out of groundwater and streams. HB 2322 limits the amount of phosphorus allowed in dishwashing detergents.

It is easier and cheaper to keep phosphorus out of dishwashing detergent than to remove it from the wastewater headed to our ground water and streams, said Governor Gregoire. I appreciate the strong support of the local governments, businesses and citizen groups in Spokane who care about the health of their beautiful river, and who made this bill happen to the benefit of the entire state.

The legislation prohibits the sale of dishwashing detergent that contains 0.5 percent or more phosphorus. The limits go into effect in Spokane, Whatcom and Clark counties in July 2008, and extend statewide in July 2010.

Governor Gregoire also took action in Spokane on House Bills 1841, 2562, 2804 and Senate Bill 6802.

In Olympia, the Governor today took action on a number of measures that will address disparities in health care (SB 6193, 6194, 6195 and 6197).

These bills direct all areas of state government to work to establish multicultural health awareness and address disparities in access to care, said Governor Gregoire.
