Gov. Christine Gregoire announces appointments to boards and commissions

Citizens appointed from Port Angeles, Aberdeen, Issaquah, Olympia, Everett, Mount Vernon, Liberty Lake, Seattle, Yakima, Port Orchard and Mercer Island

OLYMPIA - Oct. 28, 2005 - Gov. Christine Gregoire today announced appointments to the following boards and commissions:

Commission on Judicial Conduct
Candace Kalish of Port Angeles has been appointed to a term effective October 15, 2005 ending June 16, 2009. Kalish is retired after a successful career in the software industry. While working at Kurzweil Computer products she was a programmer and linguist to improve the voice quality of a reading machine for the blind. She also volunteers with the City of Port Angeles planning commission. Larry Goldberg of Aberdeen has been appointed to a term effective October 25, 2005 ending June 16, 2009. Goldberg is part owner of Northwest Furniture outlet and a substitute high school teacher. He is a long time member of the Aberdeen Rotary Club and volunteers with the American Cancer Society Camp Goodtimes as well as other community services. The commission reviews complaints alleging possible violations of the Code of Judicial Conduct, also enforcing the state ethics legislation for all members and employees of the state judicial system.

Developmental Disabilities Endowment Governing Board
Bill Ptacek of Issaquah has been appointed to a term effective October 17, 2005 ending March 15, 2009. Ptacek is the director of King County Library System. He is chair of the Washington Library Association, chair of the Developmental Disabilities Committee for King County, member of the Bellevue Rotary Club and member of the KCTS Advisory Board. The board is responsible for designing and administering the developmental disabilities endowment.

Information Services Board
Joe Dear of Olympia has been appointed to a term effective October 17, 2005 ending at the governor�s pleasure. Dear is the executive director of the Washington State Investment Board. Dear�s public service experience includes serving as Washington State Governor Gary Locke�s chief of staff from 1997 to 2001. In that role, Dear acted as chief operating officer for state government, managing the governor's office, supervising cabinet agencies and providing leadership on state government reinvention initiatives. His responsibility included coordinating budgets, policies and operations affecting education, natural resources, transportation, human resources, economic development and public health and safety. The Board develops standards, policies and procedures for managing state information services.

Governor�s Affirmative Action Policy Committee
Austin D�Souza of Olympia has been appointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending June 30, 2006. D�Souza graduated from the State University of New York and has a Masters degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He works for the Department of Retirement Systems. The committee serves as a policy and review body for the state's affirmative action program; reviewing and approving state agency affirmative action plans.

Capitol Furnishings Preservation Committee
Joyce Colton of Olympia has been reappointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending September 1, 2008. Colton retired from Interior design business after 28 yrs and is the founder of the Olympia Heritage Commission and Art Deco Society Northwest. The committee promotes and encourages the recovery and preservation of the original and historic furnishings of the state capitol group, prevents future loss of historic furnishings, and reviews and advises future remodeling and restoration projects as they pertain to historic furnishings.

State School for the Deaf Board of Trustees
Holly Parker Jensen of Everett has been reappointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending July 1, 2010. Jensen is a Lead Clinician with Seattle Mental Health. She is the president of Kids for the Deaf, chair of the Interpreter Referral Service Advisory Committee, president of the Relief Society and a cheerleading coach. Pat Clothier of Mount Vernon has been reappointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending July 1, 2010. Clothier is a certified interpreter and a student at Western Washington University in the Woodring College of Education. She volunteers with the Northwest Deaf and Hard of Hearing Association, State Conference on Childhood Deafness and is a Campfire club leader. The board serves educational needs of hearing-impaired students from throughout the state. Developing comprehensive curriculum to maximize and develop students' skills to live, work and be capable, contributing, independent citizens.

State Board of Health
David Crump of Liberty Lake has been reappointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending July 1, 2008. Crump is a coordinator for Spokane Public School District 81, a Liberty Lake Council Member and a Spokane Regional Health District Board Member. The board is the primary entity for state health policy development and is required to produce a biennial report delineating the state's health priorities.

Commission on Pesticide Registration
Art Losey of Olympia has been reappointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending September 14, 2008. Losey is the Executive Director of the Washington State Pest control Association and the Interstate Professional Applicators Association; and former asstistant director with the Department of Agriculture in charge of regulatory programs involving pesticides, fertilizers, feeds, chemical analysis, pest detection and control. The commission provides guidance to Washington State University Food Safety and Environmental Quality Lab in the area of pesticide registrations for minor crops and minor uses and in regard to the availability of pesticides for emergency use. The commission approves use of state monies appropriated to WSU specifically for studies or activities regarding pesticide registrations.

Puget Sound Council
Kenneth Dahlstedt of Mount Vernon has been appointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending July 1, 2007. Dahlstedt is a self-employed crop farmer and serves as Skagit County Commissioner as well as being a member of the Skagit Council of Governments and Skagit Transit. The council recommends to the Puget Sound Action Team projects and activities for inclusion in the biennial work plan; recommends coordination of work plan activities with other agencies' activities and proposed amendments to the Puget Sound management plan.

Sentencing Guidelines Commission
Lenell Nussbaum of Seattle has been reappointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending August 2, 2008. Nussbaum is a self-employed defense lawyer in Seattle. She is the founding member of the Washington Appellate Lawyers Association, member if the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and a violist in the Ravenna String Orchestra.
Mary Place of Yakima has been reappointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending August 2, 2008. Place is a Yakima City Councilmember and former two term Mayor. She is a registered nurse, former health teacher and a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America.
Ronald Kessler of Seattle has been appointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending August 2, 2008. Kessler is a King County Superior Court Chief Criminal judge and former Seattle Municipal Judge. He was also the acting director of the King County Public Defender Association. Russell Hauge of Port Orchard has been reappointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending August 2, 2008. Hauge is the Kitsap County Prosecutor. He is a member of the Kitsap Cares Coalition, the Washington Coalition of Crime Victim Advocates and the Kitsap County Law and Justice Council. He also volunteers at the Kitsap County Humane Society.
Suzanne Brown-McBride of Seattle has been reappointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 ending August 2, 2008. Brown-McBride is the executive director of Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs. She is a member of the Washington Coalition of Crime Victim Advocates, Nationals Sexual Violence Resource Center Steering Committee and the Washington Crime Victims Compensation Advisory Committee. She was formerly the executive director of Skamania County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. The commission evaluates state sentencing policy for both the adult criminal justice system and the juvenile justice system. Recommends standard sentences for felony offenses; studies sentencing practice across the state; studies the criminal code and makes recommendations for modification.

Washington Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect
Yaffa Maritz of Mercer Island has been appointed to a term effective October 24, 2005 and ending June 30, 2007. Maritz is the clinical director of the Listen Mothers program at Family Services. She has a BA in Social Work and a MA in Psychology. She is a board member on the Foundation for Early Learning and the University of Washington�s Advisory board for the Infant Mental Health Program. The Council�s mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect. Using contracts to establish community-based educational and service programs aimed at preventing child abuse and neglect; assisting the exchange of information; consulting with state agencies and establishing the Children's Trust Fund.
