Gov. Gregoires statement on House budget resolution

For Immediate Release: February 22, 2011

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire today issued the following statement in response to the recent budget resolution passed by the U.S. House of Representatives:

The implications of the cuts passed by the House in H.R. 1 present dramatic consequences for our state, put the nations economic recovery into jeopardy and put thousands of jobs at risk. At a time when we need to be putting people to work, not adding to the unemployment rolls, these cuts are short sighted. While governors across the country and I understand the need to address the federal debt and deficit, those choices must be tempered by the impacts they have at this critical time of economic recovery. As we seek to aid our recovery and invest in job creation, the proposed cuts would set us back and hurt our families and businesses. They come at a time when we can least afford them.

The proposed cuts are a direct assault on jobs, education, transportation infrastructure, environmental protections, health care and family planning. At a time when our recovery is teetering, these short-sighted actions would prolong our much needed recovery.
