Gov. Gregoire makes bet with Delawares Gov over Division One Football Championship

For Immediate Release: January 6, 2011

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire today made a friendly wager with Delaware Gov. Jack Markell over the outcome of the Division One Football Championship in which the Eastern Washington University Eagles will face the Delaware Blue Hens.

If the Eagles win the game, Markell will send Gregoire Dogfish Head Beach Beer (root beer only available in Delaware), lima beans and Delaware chicken from Sussex County, the top poultry producing county in the nation. If the Blue Hens prevail, Gregoire will send Markell Walla Walla wine, steak and Washington potatoes. Washingtons beef and wine are top-notch and its farms yield more potatoes per-acre than any other state in the nation.

I know this will be a tough game, but I am confident the Eagles will bring home the championship, said Gregoire. My husband Mike and I are both looking forward to grilling some Delaware chicken on the barbeque and washing it down with Dogfish Head Rootbeer.

"Despite that strange red turf, the Eastern Washington Eagles are a great team theyre fast and theyre focused," said Markell. "But we expect theyll hit that wall of Blue Hens hard. Our players have the hearts of champions, so I am looking forward to enjoying some Washington steak and potatoes."

The game kicks off at 4 p.m. PST Friday, January 7, 2010, at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.
