Gov. Gregoire pledges support for Earth Hour

For Immediate Release: March 26, 2010

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire today announced that Washington state has become an official state supporter of Earth Hour, an effort led by the World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness about the need for action to address climate change.

Washington has taken significant steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect our water supplies and promote clean energy jobs for our citizens, said Gregoire. Were proud of these accomplishments and hope that our states involvement in Earth Hour inspires individuals and organizations across the stateand across the countryto join with us.

Washington will show support of Earth Hour by turning out the lights in the dome of the state capitol building on Saturday, March 27 from 8:30 9:30 p.m. In addition, Gov. Gregoire will sign a proclamation designating that same time as Earth Hour throughout the state.

All Washingtonians are encouraged to support Earth Hour by signing up at www.earthhour.org and turning out their lights on March 27 at 8:30 p.m.

Several Washington cities already have joined with the governor in pledging their support for Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is an event in which millions of Americans will turn out their lights for one hour in support of action on climate change to create a cleaner, safer and more secure future for all. This year marks the third year of the event, which attracted more than 80 million participants in the U.S. last year, and nearly a billion people around the world, as lights dimmed on global icons such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Opera House in Sydney, the Great Pyramids of Gaza and New Yorks Empire State Building.
