Gov. Gregoires statement on UW federal grant

For Immediate Release: September 2, 2009

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire today issued the following statement on the announcement that the University of Washington will be receiving $126 million in federal funds to begin construction of a new ocean observatory:

This is exciting news for the University of Washington, and yet another example of the exemplary work of our world-class higher education system. I applaud UW professor John Delaney, who has spent two decades committed to this project, working tirelessly to secure this grant which is the largest federal award the UW has ever received. This observatory will have the ability to unlock answers surrounding everything from volcanic activity, to climate change. I congratulate the university, and look forward to learning more about the mysteries this tool will uncover as it explores the ocean floor.
