Gov. Gregoire honors State Patrol officers at memorial

For Immediate Release: May 15, 2009

SHELTON Gov. Chris Gregoire today honored the 26 Washington State Patrol officers who have been killed in the line of duty in its 88-year history.

These officers were dedicated professionals who worked hard to guard the safety of our citizens and took pride in their communities, Gregoire said. Their service, protection and ultimate sacrifices created history we will embrace and honor.

I am immensely proud of the men and women we recognize here today. Their sacrifice is humbling, said WSP Chief John Batiste. In honoring them, we reaffirm our commitment to public service. Together we will continue to pursue our work with compassion while ensuring that it is done safely.

It has been almost 10 years since a Patrol officer has died on duty. The last was Trooper James Saunders, who died on Oct. 7, 1999, at the age of 31 from gunshot wounds while conducting a traffic stop in Pasco. Saunders had served 8-1/2 years with the Patrol.

At the ceremony, Gregoire thanked the courageous and supportive families, friends and colleagues who joined to honor the fallen officers.
