Gov. Gregoires statement on UI bill
For Immediate Release: February 6, 2009
OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire today released the following statement on SHB 1906, which passed in the House today and approves an increase in unemployment insurance benefits:
I want to applaud the House members for their overwhelming, bi-partisan support of this legislation, which falls in line with my Washington Jobs Now strategy. This bill will provide much-needed assistance to Washingtons most needy, and through the end of the year, funnel an additional $200 million through our states economy.
This legislation will also expand our states worker training programs, which will assist those employees laid-off prepare for new, high-demand careers. In addition, the bill will help employers retain workers on a part-time basis through our states shared-work program.
I now urge the Senate to pass similar legislation, and look forward to working with both chambers to develop reforms that will benefit all Washingtonians.
