Gov. Gregoires statement on Boeing layoffs

For Immediate Release: January 28, 2009

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire today released the following statement on the announcement of layoffs by The Boeing Company:

I am troubled to learn that Boeing will be laying off more workers than announced earlier this month. Aerospace, along with many other Washington industries, is being hit especially hard by the national recession. My thoughts are with those employees and their families who will be affected by todays announcement.

I am scheduled to talk later today with Scott Carson, Boeings chief executive and president of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, to learn more about the companys decision.

Please know that I continue to work with our state and federal elected leaders to get economic recovery packages passed as soon as possible. These proposals will create good-paying jobs, and help relieve some of the economic burden our state now faces. But it will take all of us to get through these hard economic times. Together, we will build a stronger and more sustainable economy.

Laid off employees should contact the Employment Security department for help in filing for unemployment insurance and to explore other job opportunities. Our highest priority is to help those workers find other good jobs as quickly as possible.
