Gov. Gregoires statement on the passing of former Sen. Barney Goltz

For Immediate Release: December 26, 2008

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire issued the following statement today on the passing of former state Sen. Barney Goltz:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Sen. Goltz. I send deepest condolences to his son, Jeff Goltz, a deputy attorney general with whom I have worked closely. His father was a committed public servant with a great passion and reverence for his work.

A steadfast and prominent member of the Legislature, Barney served there 14 years. He was first elected in 1972 from the 42nd District in Whatcom County, which he represented for one term in the House of Representatives. Barney was elected to the Senate in 1974 and served until January 1987. His calm and reasoned presence inspired confidence. He was well respected by both sides of the aisle.

Barneys advocacy and leadership in higher education have been extremely important to Washingtons education system. He was a pillar in the higher education community.

I will miss Barneys passion for public service and his wonderful sense of humor. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to this extraordinary man and public servant.
