Gov. Gregoires statement on Washingtons New Economy & competitiveness rankings

For Immediate Release: November 21, 2008

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire today released the following statement on the 2008 State New Economy Index, as well as The Beacon Hill Institutes 8th Annual Competiveness Report, both of which acknowledged Washingtons ability to compete in the new economy:

Washingtons high ranking in both the 2008 State New Economy Index and The Beacon Hill Institutes Competitiveness Report is a testament to the innovation and entrepreneurship of our state. Because of bold ideas, Washington is in a prime position to compete in a transforming global economy.

The New Economy Index ranked Washington second in the nation for the states innovation capacity and globalization, and recognized the state for leading the nation in the movement toward a green economy. The Beacon Hill Institute ranked Washington sixth in the nation for its ability to attract and keep business while providing high standards of living for workers.

Washington is proud of our culture of innovation which has changed the way the world works, from Boeing aircraft to online retail at Amazon.com.

While we are certainly facing tough economic times, with continued innovation, Washington will rise to the challenge and come through even stronger. I applaud those companies that have taken risks, and look forward to continuing our work with the states business and labor communities to build a more diverse and thriving economy.
