Gov. Gregoire visits veterans training program - Helmets to Hardhats program in full swing

For Immediate Release: October 21, 2008

LACEY Gov. Chris Gregoire toured the innovative Veterans in Piping training program of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry Local 26.

Inspired by the Helmets to Hardhats initiative, this 18-week accelerated welding certification program provides training and apprenticeship opportunity for recently returned veterans, most of whom served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Now it is our duty to serve our military men and women coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan after they served their country so selflessly, Gregoire said. The Helmets to Hardhats initiative will help these dedicated soldiers launch careers in this highly skilled trade.

The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry program epitomizes locally the spirit of the national Helmets to Hardhats program, which provides a unique entry point for veterans transitioning into the states work force. The UA organization is fully funding the 18week welding certification course, a prerequisite to becoming an apprentice.

A job is the best benefit we can provide to our returning service members, said John E. Lee, director of the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs. I applaud the United Associations commitment to ensuring these returnees have the skills needed to enter apprenticeships.

The UA selected Washington to participate because of the Department of Veterans Affairs partnership with the Military Department, Washington National Guard and Employment Security Department, as well as the states ties with Fort Lewis and the Warrior Transition Battalion.
